@BohemianLotus - We’re not opposed to Norman! If you hear of anything ($600 or less rent, allows cats, 2 or more bedrooms, garage or workshop) let me know!
@Mdd16436 - Meep! 600 or less, that is going to be one tough search, especially if a garage is a requirement. (unless you are willing to live in places that are kind of run down or unsafe). I ran into the same issue a couple of years ago and just ended up buying a house because it was actually cheaper to pay a mortgage and end up in a place where I didn’t feel like I needed bars on the windows, which was all I found for less than 750 a month rent then. The house I bought is way nicer! And did I mention, cheaper! Rent is outrageous these days. I hope you are luckier than I was!
There is actually a house for rent here in Norman, 5 minutes from where I live, for 650 a month. But you probably might not be interested – it has no central heat and air. It’s an older house, not what you might be used to in terms of “fancy” like your mom’s and your current place (going by pics). No central heat and air would break the deal for me, I do NOT do window units, lol. But if you can live with that, and the fact that it’s older, the area it is in is relatively safe, it’s on the outskirts of a historic area and there’s just mostly college students and young families around here. You really can’t beat the culture here in Norman, it’s like Oklahoma’s Austin. And it meets your other requirements. NO idea what it’s like on the inside, though! http://www.rentals.com/Oklahoma/Norman/r1378848/
@BohemianLotus - I know, ugh. We just aren’t in a place to buy a house yet! I wish we were! Everything we’ve looked at that met all of our requirements has been in very unsafe areas, usually with neighbors who had bars over windows. We definitely want to be safe. We can deal with a little run-down though. (Joe’s pretty handy) Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out!
@Mdd16436 - Well Norman is really great for safe but run down areas, especially if you rent a house vs an apartment. That’s why I moved here! Safety was my #1 concern since I thought I was going to be living alone – I didn’t care if I had to live in a “poor” area. Looks/class don’t matter to me as long as the people are nice and the area is safe. My house isn’t too bad looking, but my neighborhood is run down looking as are some of my neighbor’s houses. My particular street LOOKS like the kind you’d be afraid to leave the doors unlocked, but it’s not. It’s just old and run down. It just really helps to know the area! Your biggest problem would be finding an available place here. Elsewhere in the surrounding towns, run down usually also means unsafe, unless you go really rural like in blanchard or newcastle country areas. I think Norman being safer than the rest has something to do with it being a university town. Don’t get me wrong, there are a couple of apartment complexes you should avoid, but 90% of the city is good to go. If you decide to look at a place in Norman, feel free to ask me if it’s one of the “avoid” areas! I know most of the city pretty well just from living here and also keeping an eye on the crime statistics, lol.

Totally a perfect date night!
